"Is there any kind of empty building nearby where I can bring this thing to work on it without freezing to death?" Flux, having steadied himself after his brush with spinning death, pulled said death out of the ground and began looking it over. "It would appear that the emptiest place nearby is your head," he mumbled. With a tap, he knocked some mud loose of the fan before tossing it back into the crater. "If you need a place to work on this deathtrap, I have a workshop not too far from here. I set up in an old mineshaft just inside the woods where I put some of my larger projects. It should work for this." "There are a few conditions though. Number one, you work safely and make sure nothing explodes in my shop. Number two, no messing with any of the projects I already have out there. And Number three" he grinned. "I get to give this thing a good going over." Steel Glint gave Flux's hoof an enthusiastic shake. "It's a deal!" He turned back toward the wreckage, which was still smoldering. "Now...how do we get it there?"

Give me...oh, five minutes. I can gather what we need all in one place." Page wandered off, returning exactly five minutes later. Flanked by four beefy stallions, each carrying a lot of rope. "Get to work, boys. And I won't tell your wives about what we did in that barn last week...and 5 days ago...and yesterday. Snap to it!" The did exactly as said, wrapping up his gizmo and hauling it out of the crater like it weighed 4 pounds. "Go where the crazy inventor tells you...and then meet me in the barn. I need my exercise for the day."

"Go where the crazy inventor tells you...and then meet me in the barn. I need my exercise for the day." Flux sighed. "Page, I never want to know how you do what you do, but you do have your moments." He started down the path back to town, turning over his shoulder to motion to the burly moving company. "This way 'boys.' The shop's not too far from here."
A very short while later, having led this procession through town and a short way past his home, the party stood before what looked like a wooden barn built into the side of a mountain. The front third of the face of this structure was taken up by two large doors that swung outward from a central point. There was also a more normal sized door just to the left of those. "Home sweet home... well... Shop sweet shop," Flux said with a grin. "Let me pop inside and open it up for you." A flash later and the doors wheeled out with a well oiled rumble to reveal a large garage bay, big enough to hold two large wagons. The wooden structure of the barn only extended past the facade 10 more hooves before turning to the stone of the mountain itself. "Honestly I still can't believe I got permission to remodel this place. It used to be the mouth of a mining operation, but when the mines ran dry, they just boarded it up." A spark of magic later and six jacks were arranged on the floor for the machine to be placed on, three per side. "Carefully now gentlemen. The less damage, the better."

Fern marveled at the amount of wok it must have taken to carve a shop of this size out of a cliff face. He shook his head, and started walking. He looked around the mechanical workshop at all the bits and bobs Flux had stored away for safekeeping. Fern wandered aimlessly throughout the structure viewing all of the leftover contraptions and gizmos Flux had amassed over the years. Fern was looking at some mechanism hung from the wall that looked suspiciously like a mutilated cheese grater, when he bumped right into Page. "Oh... uh, hello..."

Think of a tree line."So, you work with trees and whatnot? I guess you must be real experienced with all types of wood." He winked at him. "If so, then we have something in common, handsome."

The green pony stamped his feet, warding off the omnipresent winter chill. "I've been working with wood since I was a foal," he said with a smile. "I prefer hard wood myself, but the soft stuffs fine too. I've got some orders waiting if you'd like to lend a hoof!"

You're too innocent for me." He spun around, whistling for his four accomplices. "To that shack, fellas. You four are a different story from him. Andele."

Steel Glint nodded. "This will do," he said. The craft, no longer smoldering, had been set down on the jacks. Without the smoke and the rubble, it was easier to get the measure of the thing - a banged-up oval of plate steel, about the size of a wagon. In the front was a cracked windshield for the cockpit, and clustered around the rear were several turbofans. Mounted to the underside was a large device that looked somewhere between a spotlight and a death ray. Since the craft had landed on its side, the device was more or less unharmed.
"It's going to take a while to get her up and running again," Steel said. "I may need some hard-to-find parts." He turned to Flux. "I take it you're the mechanic around these parts? Would you know where I could by an electromagnet, a ruby laser, and a mouse trap?"

Would you know where I could by an electromagnet, a ruby laser, and a mouse trap?" He thought for a moment. "Well, the mouse trap is easy, I think one of our local shop ponies would have them. Maybe Coin." He moved to a large bookshelf and pulled down one of the many books there. "As for the electromagnet, I don't think anypony SELLS them outright, but I can't imagine it would be overly difficult to make one. Materials there can likely be purchased at the hardware store." He magicked a notepad out of a drawer, and started some calculations. "You'll be on your own for the laser I'm afraid."

"An emerald laser will work in a pinch," Steel said. "I'll just need to make a few adjustments so the machine doesn't wipe out the entire town in a rapidly-expanding sphere of superheated plasma when I start it up. It'll probably take me a couple of hours."
Steel disappeared into the bowels of the craft. The sounds of clanging metal could be heard. "I suppose I should get a basic toolbox, too...it gets tedious doing all of this by horn."
He emerged with tangles of wire in his mane. "I suppose I should ask a little about this town. It's going to go down in history as the first community to have winter wrapped up through the power of SCIENCE," he said, pronouncing the word in capital letters somehow. "I should at least learn its name."

"To that shack, fellas. You four are a different story from him. Andele." 'Was it something I said?' Fern thought. 'I might've been a bit too forward for him...' Fern sighed, watching the five ponies head towards the run-down shack. He turned his head, and trotted towards Flux and the crazy scientist. As he was walking back, he caught part of the inventors' conversation. Steel disappeared into the bowels of the craft. The sounds of clanging metal could be heard. "I suppose I should get a basic toolbox, too...it gets tedious doing all of this by horn." He emerged with tangles of wire in his mane. "I suppose I should ask a little about this town. "I should at least learn its name." "I see at least three... no, wait, four toolboxes from my current position," Fern said, stopping to watch the two ponies. "Also, the name of the town is Winter Haven! It fits snugly inside the Foal Mountain range. There's even a ski lodge nearby!" Fern said. He chuckled. "I may not go into town much, but I do explore fairly frequently."

"Hah! So there are!" Steel said as he scooped up a tool box under each foreleg and hobbled back to the craft. He disappeared inside again, and there commenced a loud banging. "A ski lodge, you say? I may have to build a re-winterizer for them, as soon as I'm done with the de-winterizer here. Of course, the re-winterizer will have to be smaller in scale. I want to keep the slopes powdered, not start another ice age!"
There was a crash. A terrified hamster scurried out of the vehicle's hatch. It ran between Fern's legs before disappearing under a pile of abandoned mining equipment.
"I might want to think about installing a more reliable power source while I'm making repairs..." Steel muttered.

Steel muttered. "You might also want to think about arranging financing," Flux said from his desk. "This thing looks like it's going to run you up a pretty penny to repair, much less run. The wire for the magnet on its own will be..." He stopped as another bang-crash echoed out of the machine. "And I don't know if you'd noticed, but this isn't exactly prime hamster territory either." The hamster popped its head back out of the pile of tools and glanced around nervously. Flux put a hoof to his mouth in a shushing gesture, and it slipped back into the pile.

"Yes," Steel said as he ambled out of the craft. "I'll definitely need a new power source. Maybe a radioisotope thermal generator, or even a small fusion plant. Hamsters are the way of the past!" He chucked a badly dented rodent exercise wheel onto the floor of the mine. "We'll start with the electromagnet, though. I don't suppose you'd know who could provide me with a lot of copper wire, would you?"

"I don't suppose you'd know who could provide me with a lot of copper wire, would you?" "Well I have some around here," he said, moving to his supply cabinets. "But I don't have enough, or the right gauge, for electromagnets." "I imagine that your best option would be to bother Coin Counter a bit. If she doesn't have the wire we need, I imagine she'd be able to either get it or tell us where we could." He went back to his desk and motioned Steel over. "We'll need specs from you on what strength you're looking for of course, but other than that, we can leave whenever you're ready."
