So, first thing we should talk about aside from the whole GM mechanic is the town. Now we could use the official map of Equestria which you can find here. Or we could take place in a made up town. Here are my two suggestions. Canon: Hollow Shades. What can I say, I love a small town, I plan to move to a small town after Christmas. I'm a small town kind of guy. That's really the only reason I'm suggesting Hollow Shades. Non-Canon: Winter Haven. A small (yep, small town LOL) town that's situated in The Smokey Mountains (canon place) and the name comes from the temperature average and the snowfall average. Those are my two suggestion, but I would love to hear what y'all have to say.

The issue with anywhere canon is that if anyone actually FOLLOWS canon then they'll be tempted to bring that into the RP. With that in mind I recommend that we go with Winter Haven.
When I imagined Winter Haven, it was a very quaint village high in the mountains with winding paths up and down the mountains, covered with pine trees, leading to shops and houses. The air crisp and cool at all times. As the name implies it's fairly snowy throughout the year.
That is my recommendation.

Yea, a non-canon place would give us more room to explore the world of magical talking pastel colored equine, who ponders whether or not acquaintances is indeed sorcery.

What's the tourism scene like in Winter Haven?

What's the tourism scene like in Winter Haven? I'd imagine a lot of ponies coming to the town for skiing, ice skating, to enjoy the nice mountain scenery from their log cabins, you know your typical ski resort vacation spot.

Count my vote for Hollow Shades. Well, Winter Haven doesn't HAVE to be a tourist town. It's a non-canon place so it can be whatever we want it to be.

Honestly, I like the idea of Winter Haven being a small secluded town with a tight knit community of ponies.

Although I think the ponies in Winter Haven would have more to fear from dragons than bears. Since in the show, dragons tend to sleep and keep their loot in mountains. So, Winter Haven is a small mountain town with a close knit community. Would you like to add anything to that Atom?

I think a tourist town with a lot of locals and tourists allows an optimum mix of weirdos, especially weirdos who don't know each other quite yet (i.e., new characters).

I vote strongly for Winter Haven. When I first imagined this place back on Exile, I thought of it this way.
Tall trees, the wind whistling through their needles. The earth steep and rocky save for small valleys where the dirt is rich and pure. Well worn paths weaving back and forth along the side of the mountain leading down to the main town with a kind of Germanic village design. Warm fires waft the smell of burning pine through the whole place as the smoke curls from each chimney. Every winter, there's a competition for best Heartswarming Cookie, and every old nag, many young mare , and even a few stallions compete for the envy of the entire village for a year .
It's a peaceful place now, but there was a time in the past where it was bustling with the wound of miners in the hills searching for gems, gold, and other precious items.
I'm out of time to continue this now, but I'll post more as we go and the reasons we should do it here.

Not much of the outside world can touch them here. They are too far from the large cities and generally too small for much of interest to reach them.
This is not to say that they're cut off however. There are tourists that come to town very often. Winter Haven is a backpacker's dream. Varied terrain for any level of skill, and beautiful views all around makes any walk an enjoyable one.
Winter Haven is also a great spot for skiing as well. About 3 miles from the town proper, on the peak of a neighboring mountain is the lodge itself, a massive log cabin with all the ammenities.
