Digitalis was obviously shocked. "You... you take pictures?"

"I call the front!"
Page bounded ahead of them.
"The one in back is likely to get picked off first...wait...oh, get your minds out of the gutters! The pictures are concept covers for my hopefully soon to be published novel. I just don't want them stolen. Jeez."

"So it's agreed then," the doctor said with a grunt, once again picking up his load to avoid scratching the floors, "we go look for the study as a group, taking turns in the back to avoid being 'picked off', and we use Mr. Turner, bravely leading the pack, to sweep for traps, much like a canary in a copper mine. Brilliant."

He passed by Digitalis on his way to the end of the line, making sure to whisper... " I'm used to seeing handsome ponies like you from behind anyway."He straightened his glasses, continuing on his way."

Chiselle lightens up her horn, which gave off a bright silvery glow. "I can take the rear...not like that. I mean I'll bring up the rear."

"I guess that leaves me out front," Flux said, unfocusing his light to fill the room again. "Stay close, but not too close. If I find a trap, I want to be able to move."
He started down the hall. "And may Luna protect us."

The hall was lined with portraits of long-dead, serious-looking ponies. Had Flux been paying attention to these portraits, he might have noticed that as he passed each one, a pair of narrowed eyes followed him.
On the other side of the wall, Clay kept pace with the group, watching them through the eye-holes that some eccentric former resident had cut into the portraits. The holes were small - too small for Clay to get a really good view - but Clay could see the silhouette of a unicorn in the lead. If I can take him out, the rest of the group will think twice about coming after me, Clay thought.
The secret passage terminated ahead; a rectangular hole in the wall ahead was blocked by some other piece of furniture, and presumably led to a room off the hall. Clay picked up his pace to get in position ahead of the group. He carefully, quietly slid what turned out to be a bookcase out of the way on its greased tracks. The room was a small study, and he could see the door from his position inside the hole to the secret passage.
As the unicorn passed by, Clay wound up and launched the pickaxe through the door with all the force he could muster. It buried its head in the wall directly in front of the unicorn, inches from his nose. Suppressing the urge to grumble at the miss, Clay ducked back into the secret passage and slid the bookcase back into place before anypony had noticed him.

Flux pulled up well short, going from the front of the group to the back in the space of a heartbeat. "THE LOVE OF LUNA WAS THAT?! It nearly took my bleeding head off!"

"That, would be a pick-axe."
Mane sticking out like he'd been struck by lightning, Page tried smoothing it back. Only for it to spring back up a second later.
Well, I'm so freaked out that my mane has stopped cooperating. Think, think, think. I'm a pony of logic. Think! Mystery novels aren't my forte, but I'm sure it applies.
"Okay, let's analyze. In 'The Hoovely Boys and the Mystery of the Mansions Gold' the boys were hounded by a ner-do-well skulking through secret passages in the mansion...no, that's insane."

"I don't know, Mr. Turner," said Digitalis, setting down his load, "this seems exactly like something my sister would do, but considering that this was a pickaxe instead of large rocks and notes teasing us about our love lives, I'm not sure I'd want to go searching for secret wall passages and the raving lunatics they'd possibly contain, though if it would get me away from you..." he mumbled, rummaging through his trunk for matches. "Is there a fireplace in here? This would probably be a good place to hide from the storm. Not as big as I feared it would be."

Flux took a deep breath and cleared his throat. "Okay, so I know that I was big on finding the Study. Here it is! Someone else goes in first, I'm done being the leader."

"I'm sure as Celestia not going in there. Flux appears to be out...good news, Chiselle. Looks like your it."
Page gave her a mocking pat on the shoulder.
"Good luck with that."

Coin noted, Hm. Booby trap or wrath of the undead? Regardless, we now know for a fact that there are either a bunch of booby traps here, or some loon trying to kill us. "We could return to the entryway, and simply huddle together for warmth. If we want to go in here, I could lead the way, though I don't have a light," she offered.

Chiselle rolled her eyes and sighed at Page. "For that, you get none of my wine, none."
Chiselle then reached into her bag and pulled out a pointed chisel and floated it above her head. With a gulp she carefully threaded into the study. Her green eyes shifted back and forth glancing at all the corners in the study. She found a few dust covered chairs circled around a stone fireplace. The room held books that towered above her, reaching all the way to the ceiling. To the far side of the study was a small cabinet, some pictures and a table with a chair on either side. Chiselle walked over the table to find that there's a chess set on it with several pieces on different parts of the board.
"Hey guys...I think it's okay to come in. Pretty sure there's no spooky scary skeletons in here."
