I didn't see anywhere to put something like this, so we can use this thread to discuss our various headcanons.
In "Putting Your Hoof Down", Fluttershy uses the phrase "flying feather". My theory is that, every few years, pegasi molt. So they have lots of feathers flying off. Everyone in Equestria is used to this, so no one really pays attention to or cares about them. So the phrase can be used to refer to something absolutely nopony cares about.

I remember the first time I saw that episode. I honestly thought she was going to say something completely different. *laughs* As for my headcanon: Honestly, I think if the producers of MLP (Hasbro) wasn't so hinged on the Princess toylines. Celestia and Luna would be The Queens, Cadance and Shining Armor would be Duke and Duchesses and Twilight Sparkle would be an actual Princess, heir to Equestria's throne.

I believe a fanfiction once had Queen Chrysalis question Celestia on this very topic, and Celestia claimed that she stuck with "Princess" because the term suggests youth and beauty, which I suppose helps make an extremely powerful, immortal or nigh-immortal monarch seem more approachable.

My little annoyance with this kind of stems from the fact that The Crystal Empire is apparently within Equestria's borders...so, Cadance and Shining Armor really shouldn't be on equal footing as Celestia and Luna. Twilight is a Princess, but she clearly is not on the same level as Celestia or Luna.

Or maybe it's saying something about titles being irrelevant. Celestia doesn't rule because she's a princess. She rules because she's friggin Celestia.

Part of me also wonders how an "Empire" somehow became some kind of vassal or sister state or something and yet it's still an "Empire".

My headcanon for that is that the Crystal Empire used to be much larger, and is referred to as such out of custom/respect (specifically I theorize that it may have contained the three pony tribes at one point, though that may be going beyond mere headcanon).

Have y'all notice that Ponyville is the only town in Equestria where the ponies are naked? Go look through the old episodes again. Canterlot: clothes, Manehatten: clothes, Appleoosa: clothes, Dodge Junction: clothes. The only other city aside from Ponyville that has naked ponies is The Crystal Empire.
So my headcanon is: Ponyville is a nudist colony and The Crystal Ponies did just wake up from a thousand years slumber, so they haven't caught onto what the social norm is, which is clothes.

I don't know; if Ponyville were anything as strange and/or unique as being pretty much Equestria's sole nudist colony, I'd think that Twilight and Rarity, at least, would wear clothes more often, and someone would make at least a vague remark about Ponyvillians being "weird". My personal headcanon is that generally, the average pony only wears clothing for special occasions, and for whatever reason wearing clothing regularly is something pretty much only the upper crust does. In Appleoosa and Dodge and other frontier towns, there is still fashion to be considered, but the clothes they wear are more a matter of the practical concerns of day-to-day life in deserts and badlands. Bonnets and wide-brimmed hats for sun protection, boots to protect from snakes and scorpions and hot/sharp rocks and whatnot, bandanas for further sun protection and to keep blowing sand and dust out of their mouths, and so on. Ponyville, meanwhile, is far from "frontier" status and has very few of the rich and famous rubbing elbows (unless they're just passing through), and thus is bound neither by custom nor practicality to wear much of anything.

So here's another headcanon: Alicorns/Princesses do not necessarily mean a powerful government position. It kind of works the same way that becoming a Buddha does in Buddhism. Basically Celestia, Luna, Cadance, and now Twilight has become enlightened in their own way and has ascended to Alicorn-hood.

The titles and governmental power are just customary, in recognition of your extraordinary talent and exceptional... friendliness? Harmonious...ness? All-around capacity and drive for maturity and benevolence?

So my main bit of head-canon is the entirety of a quite well written bit of fan-fiction called Windfall. The main feature of this fiction is that it happens after the cartoon is over. It follows the Mane 6 as they live life after their crazy adventures. One of them is having a baby and needs the support of her friends. If you've not read it, you really ought to. (It was written after like the second season and much before the latest seasons, so you'll have to excuse the cross canon contradictions.) Also, there is a sequel! I like it as well. Maybe not as agreeable headcanon-wise, but still, I like it. Kinda steampunky and it brings back some old "friends" for some amusements.
