So this is a headcanon that actually requires your knowledge of another show, The Venture Bros. What is this headcanon you ask? Well in The Venture Bros. universe, the villains and good guys do fight one another. They're part of a group called The Guild of Calamitous Intent. The Guild provides rules, regulations, treaties in which the super villains and super scientist must abide by. There's even a match-making services in which either side of a conflict is evenly matched.
So, what does this have to do with MLP? Well this goes back to the episode Daring Don't. In which we find out that the adventures of Daring Do is actually real and so are the villains that she fights. In my headcanon, there is an organization similar to The Venture Bros' Guild of Calamitous Intent and they serve pretty much the same function. However this only applies to ponies like Daring Do. When it comes to the villains that the Mane Six fight, such as Nightmare Moon, Discord, Queen Chrysalis, etc., these villains are real threats. They don't belong in this little guild.

I've always been fond of the idea that Crystals McGee - sorry, King Sombra - was somehow involved in Luna's corruption into Nightmare Moon (which would have occurred around the time he was banished, a thousand years before the show's present time). A related headcanon is that he had something to do with the Alicorn Amulet. I'm sure the comics will kill the first idea - they have a series of villain origin stories coming up - but it's fun to think about for the time being.

Sombra does seem like the type to play Satan, but something tells me he lacks the finesse and cunning to toy with and build slowly on someone's emotions subtly enough for his target to not notice there's something seriously wrong with his propositions. If you mean he had some involvement with the actual, physical, supernatural process of Luna transforming bodily into Nightmare Moon, that's quite a bit more likely.

I was going more on the idea that he used to have something to his personality other than "crystalllssss". But like I said, that idea is about to get Jossed, I'm sure.
