I just got back from Hickory Motor Speedway and wow, what a night! There was only three series running tonight, the East Coast Flathead, The Allison Legacy Race Series Finally, there's the KOMA Unwind Modified Madness Series.
East Coast Flathead:
This will probably be the shortest entry because honestly not much happened in this 20 lap race. The 99 car started on the pole, and stayed there, he even lapped the field a couple of time. It was basically a snore-fest. If you thought Kevin Harvick dominating in Sprint Cup was bad, this was worse. Thankfully the race only lasted 20 laps.
Allison Legacy Race Series:
Now this is a race worth writing about! You had two dominating cars that started 1st and 2nd and raced one another the entire time for the 35 lap race. While the pole sitter basically held onto his position and won the race, 2nd place guy gave him a very hard fight and kept right on his back bumper, even beating him to the corner a few times. The race came down to the wire! That's right, it was a photo finish with 1st and 2nd place finishing nose to nose as they cross the finish line! On the final stretch it looked like 2nd place was going to come out on top and he almost closed the deal! It had me on my feet and cheering!
KOMA Modified 2015 Season Opener: Relaxation Revolution 125:
What sets this series apart from the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is the fact that the pit stops are a bit different. There is a mandatory pit stop rule in place and the cars do have to go up on the jack, and car adjustment can be made during a pit stop, which is very crucial, because that came into play in tonight's race.
The pole sitter enjoyed early success in the race and even pitted early in an early caution. The early pit stop gave him a good lead on the rest of the field and he was even working through the entire field until about lap 80, when caution number two came out. Then the other lead cars came down pit row and the pole sitter's advantage was gone, now things are heating up. You not only had the Myers Brothers (Jason and Burt) but you also had the #31, #5, and the infamous Jeremy Mayfield battling for positions. Now I don't know what happened to Jeremy Mayfield, but he retired about halfway through the race. Which I thought was confusing because he was actually leading the race.
Anyways, as the clock wind down, the pole sitter is still running up front but he's losing his position to the #5 and #31 who then started to battle for 1st place. That early pit-stop not looking so smart right now. Then with 25 laps to go, Burt Myers came down a second time while his brother Jason Myers came out. It looked like Burt's night was done but nope he came back out and charged through the field. He battle for every position and soon re-joined his brother. Jason got behind Burt and it became a family affair. Burt charging the way and Jason following behind him.
With 15 laps to go, Burt Myers was battling for first place, he goes low, he goes high but #5 is holding onto the lead. Then with about 10 laps to go, Burt Myers put the chrome horn to #5 between turn 3 and 4 and moved him up the track and claim 1st place. Jason Myers try to follow behind but #5 recovers and settles into second place.
Burt takes the checker, #5 takes second and Jason takes third.
Hickory Motor Speedway is def. going on my list of tracks to revisit, along with Ace Speedway.
